The Ministers of Transport and Public Business discuss developments in establishing a multimodal transport company

Cairo – Mubasher: Kamel, the Egyptian Minister of Transport, held a meeting with Hisham Tawfiq, Minister of Public Business Sector, to follow up on the latest developments in the study related to the executive steps for establishing a joint multimodal transport company, in order to activate the cooperation protocol signed between the Egyptian National Railways Authority and the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport.

The two ministers reviewed the report on the study mechanisms that are required to be implemented, and what they contain of the legal procedures necessary to establish the company and prepare a detailed work plan, including the timeframe and investment cost for its establishment, according to a statement issued today, Thursday.

They also discussed the preparation of the concept of the project management and operation contract, the operating principles, work procedures, and the general framework for cooperation with various partners in line with international best practices in operating methods.

During the meeting, the Minister of Transport confirmed that the establishment of this company comes within the framework of the political leadership’s directives to maximize the system of transporting goods in Egypt to maintain the huge road and bridges network and to increase the railway authority’s financial resources to improve the service provided to passengers.

He pointed out that this company will contribute to achieving the integration of transportation means with each other to maximize the volume of transport in Egypt, whether within the republic or from within to abroad through Egyptian ports as well as from abroad to the interior, and the company will also transport goods from Egyptian ports via railways to places of manufacture or Distribution to be transported after that by trucks to places of consumption, which will contribute to the absence of congestion in the ports, increase the circulation in them, and will be reflected in reducing the cost of goods for the Egyptian citizen.

The minister added that one of the most important points that the project study will address is laying down the foundations and mechanisms through which the management and operation of the project company will be entrusted to a specialized operator with international experience in managing the logistics of transporting goods using multiple media, to be chosen based on a limited tender among the major companies working in this field As well as the financing pattern related to the establishment of this company.

For his part, the Minister of Business Sector referred to the benefits of combining the services of land transport of goods carried out by the companies affiliated with the Ministry of Business Sector with the services of transporting goods via the railway to provide an integrated service to customers that is fast, efficient and low in cost.

He indicated that it would lead to doubling the volume of transport that the joint company to be established between the Railways Authority and the Holding Company for Transportation could double, by achieving integration between the two modes of transport, especially in the case of operating by a professional private operator, especially in the case Adding river transport to the system.

The two sides agreed to form a joint working committee from the two ministries, in addition to the project consultant, to speed up the completion of the study to start the procedures for establishing the company, which would represent a major quantum leap in the field of goods transportation in Egypt.
