A few days ago, GB Morgan announced that Egypt had joined the watch list in its government bond index for emerging markets.

The move comes as a prelude to joining the Egyptian government debt instruments in the local currency in the index within a maximum period of 6 months.

Dr. Mohamed Maait, the Egyptian Minister of Finance, expected that his country would enter 14 issues with a total value of about $ 24 billion, and their percentage in the index would be 1.78%.

Egypt joined this index, but graduated from it in June 2011 for not meeting the requirements of JP Morgan.

Two and a half years ago, the Ministry of Finance began seeking to re-join the index by fulfilling the bank’s requirements, including: prolonging the life of government debt, adjusting the “Yield curve” and raising the percentage of foreign investors ’participation in government financial instruments with an increase in the size of each issue.

The Egyptian Minister of Finance pointed out that with the transition of Egypt from the watch list to the actual index, about $ 4.4 billion would be pumped in additional new investments into the Egyptian government securities market, including treasury bills and bonds, thus achieving a debt management strategy to reduce costs.
