Egypt and Sudan agree to intensify efforts to reach a binding agreement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Cairo – Mubasher: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting with Abdullah Hamdok, Prime Minister of Sudan, within the framework of Sisi’s official visit to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

The spokesperson for the Presidency, Ambassador Bassam Radi, said today, Saturday, that the meeting discussed the latest developments regarding the negotiations of the Renaissance Dam, as agreement was reached on intensifying joint efforts during the coming period in various forums to push towards reaching a binding and balanced legal agreement on filling and operating a dam. Al-Nahda, according to the Middle East News Agency.

The two sides stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Nile Basin countries in order to achieve sustainable use of water resources in the Nile River, in a manner that would achieve the common interests of the peoples of all countries and avoid harming any party.

The Spokesman stated that the talks witnessed discussion of various frameworks and prospects for joint cooperation between Egypt and Sudan, as satisfaction was expressed for the level of cooperation and coordination existing between the two countries, while stressing the importance of supporting and strengthening it for the benefit of the two brotherly countries and peoples.

The two sides indicated the necessity of optimizing all available opportunities to enhance integration between the two countries, as well as building on the positive results achieved during the mutual visits between senior officials of the two countries.

Al-Sisi stressed that his current visit to Sudan comes as a continuation of the distinguished relations that bind the two countries at the official and popular levels, and the common destiny and future between them, and in support of bilateral cooperation at all levels.

Hamdok expressed his country’s appreciation for the close cooperation relations with Egypt, which are a reflection of the human and civilizational heritage connected between the two countries, and praised the sincere Egyptian efforts seeking to contribute to stabilizing stability in Sudan, as well as the centrality of the Egyptian role in maintaining peace and security in the African continent.

Hamdok stressed that there are broad prospects for developing joint cooperation between the two brotherly countries, and Sudan’s keenness to provide a supportive environment for this in various strategic development areas, as well as its reliance on the Egyptian role in support of the ongoing Sudanese efforts to drop and reschedule foreign debts on it.

Al-Sisi pointed out that Egypt is keen to advance bilateral cooperation in various fields with the brotherly Sudan, especially with regard to the implementation of the two projects of electrical and railway connections, and the promotion of a favorable climate for the establishment of joint investment projects, whether industrial or agricultural, as well as boosting commercial and economic relations in the two countries.

Al-Sisi alluded to the importance of activating the activities of the joint technical committees between Egypt and Sudan, as well as activating the memoranda of understanding and protocols concluded between the two countries, taking into account the inclusion of these agreements in various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
